My TV and calmer channel surfing

«My TV» is a new screen to start from. It has three large tiles — «All channels», «Favourites» and «Recordings» — and below them a «Continue watching» row with the channel you left off on, your recently watched channels, your favourites and the recordings scheduled next. Open it from the menu, under «My TV». If you would rather see it the moment the app starts, Settings now has a «On startup» option: «My TV» instead of «Straight to live». By default the app still goes straight to live — nothing changes until you ask for it.

The menu now has «Previous channel»: one press takes you back to whatever you were watching before. The channel’s name is shown next to the item, so you are not pressing blind.

Surfing channels no longer tears the stream. Every press of up or down used to switch the channel for real: getting to the one you wanted through a dozen neighbours meant the box opened and abandoned a dozen streams, each answering with a pause and a black screen. Now, while you scroll, the bottom bar simply changes the name, the logo and the current programme, and only the channel you stop on is tuned in. The bar says as much: «Choosing a channel · release the button to tune in».

The TV guide is laid out by the hour. Programmes used to sit strictly by time, and on dense channels — news every half hour, short blocks in between — the titles overlapped and became unreadable. An hour now gets a column of its own: while the programmes fit, everything stays where the clock puts it, as before; when they do not, the programmes of that hour share the column equally and the tail collapses into «N more programmes». The cursor still walks through all of them, the collapsed ones included.

The guide also has more room. The channel card has gone from the header: it took up a third of the width and repeated what the row on the left already shows. Programme titles and times are set in lighter weights, so a narrow cell fits one more line.

The app has an icon of its own. The box’s app list used to show a drawn outline of a television — a placeholder that slipped into the build and stayed there far too long. It is now the TVISTA logo on our blue, in the form Android 8 and newer uses to fit icons into any shape.

Boxes come in 32- and 64-bit flavours, and their packages differ. Which build you have is shown in the app: «Settings → Update».
